Starting Your Website Build

Ok, i’m really pleased you’ve stepped into my office to read what i’m typing. Whatever your business, i’m a wordpress website coach and the first steps are easy :

  1. Register your url – your web address  at https://www.ukreg.com/
  2. Select website hosting – I recommend https://www.hostgator.com/
  3. Use their quick install link to install WordPress – their guide is here
  4. Create your email account on Hostgator – this is how to do that
  5. Look on Theme Forest for a design (tip – click on wordpress themes > filter by best sellers; better support, less bugs), buy your design and download the zip file > upload to your wordpress and activate the recommended plugins.
  6. Most themes will come with ‘demo data’ > install the demo data and your wordpress should look like the theme design you just purchased.
  7. Edit the pages to replace the demo data with your own words and pictures – you might need to buy image editing software like Photoshop Elements to create your own images and optimise them for web. Otherwise the images are huuuuuuuge and affect your page load speed as well as giving you other problems. Not good.
  8. Publish and maintain your website. Ideally at first blogging every day with quality content, including video if you can and distributing this on your social media channels. Here is what makes a good blog.
  9. Advertise and promote your website. Grow your audience and sign up to marketing newsletters. Enthusiasm will get you started, but habit will keep you going. Learn everything you can about sales and marketing, both online and offline, by attending the many free events government business growth agencies put on. This is a good website to sign up to newsletters on marketing https://www.smartinsights.com/. Please let me know by commenting on this blog if you come across other marketing newsletters you can recommend.

Call me if you get stuck on any of these stages and I can coach you through them. I’ve been doing this a long time and i’m adamant the best websites have a great deal of input from the business owner, even if long term you decide to employ, or out source your website, marketing and PR. My 9 year old Jennifer is sat next to me building her first website. It’s easy with a coach for a mummy.

Learn how to get the most out of WordPress Website with WordPress Website Training.

One of the reasons WordPress is so popular, is that it is so easy to use, and most people find that they are able to use many of the basic features with little or no formal training. If your website or blog uses WordPress, you are in good company because over 85 Million people have chosen to use WordPress as the perfect platform to manage their websites – making it (by far) the worlds most popular Content Management System (CMS).

However, WordPress is also extremely powerful and has loads of more sophisticated and advanced features that can add a lot of extra benefit to your website or blog.  In addition, there are thousands of add-on products (called “plugins”) that are freely available and add all sorts of additional features and functionality to your website. Our WordPress hands on workshop will not only teach you how to manage your own WordPress based website or blog, but will give to practical hands on experience, and ensure that you are maximising the benefits of WordPress for your specific needs.

8 Hours Customised Training/Consulting

Whilst we can (if you wish), spend a full day with you, One on One training tends to be fairly intense, so we typically offer this in 2 or 4 hour “chunks” of time – which can be spread across a 3 month period if you need.  This allows us to focus on a specific aspect of your WordPress training needs, and gives you time to go away, have a “play” and come up with a new list of questions for the next session.  It is also possible to use this time as training , or consulting or a mixture of the two.  Sometimes, you may want something implemented,. but you don’t necessarily want or need to know how to do it.  It may only take us half an hour to implement something, but 1 1/2 hrs to teach you how to do it… so in these cases it is more cost effective for us to do it as consulting.

Personalised WordPress Training

Our WordPress Workshop offers you personalised WordPress training to help you get the most out of WordPress.  We customise your WordPress training to meet to your specific needs so you can be certain that you are not wasting time learning things that you already know (or don’t need). To ensure that everything we cover is relevant to you, we only offer WordPress training as one on one and small group training. As a part of the preparation for this workshop, we will liaise with you over exactly how you are using WordPress and what you want to achieve with this training befpre your training sessions.  Topics covered could include all (or some) of the following :

    What Makes A Good Blog?

“Nobody reads ads. People read what interests them, and sometimes it’s an ad.”
    -Howard Luck Gossage

Effective blogs improve your website’s potential as a lead generation tool

What makes a good blog – I’ve just been asked. On a daily basis for years now we’ve been offering advice, training and hands on support in how to ‘Blog’. The intricacies of what makes an effective blog and by that i mean how do we get to the top of google, has changed rapidly, as is the nature of the internet, online marketing and search engine optimisation. Keep signing up for and reading those email newsletters from marketing disruptors to keep on top of it, or call on us for advice.

The basics of common sense sales and marketing have remained.

A good blog has eye catching and relevant images, a short sharp and well thought out video preferably towards the top of your blog, good use of styling to make the content easy to read and links into your website pages and to external sources you reference. Make sure your website is mobile friendly and check it on a mobile phone. If you can turn off large images on mobile great. Make sure you have a call to action at the bottom and a contact form.

Here’s a blog we’ve just published for Richard C Pendry. We’re on with improving his current website http://www.richardcpendry.com and helping him with his sales and marketing both for his consultancy business and his brand as an emerging author.
